Audio Recorder — Free Online Mic Recorder with Waveform Trim
Record from your microphone in the browser, see a live level meter and waveform, then trim and export as WAV. Free, no signup, nothing uploaded.
What it does
Audio Recorder captures sound from your microphone directly in the browser — no software install, no account. While you record, you see a live input-level meter so you know you're actually being picked up. Once you stop, you get a real waveform you can trim with draggable handles, then export the selection as a clean WAV file or download the original recording untouched.
How it works
Recording uses your browser's built-in MediaRecorder, which saves in whatever format your browser supports best (usually WebM or MP4 audio) — good for accurate playback, but not something you can slice sample-by-sample. To make trimming possible, the tool decodes your recording into raw audio samples the moment you stop, then draws a waveform from those samples and lets you drag two handles to pick a region.
"Export selection as WAV" doesn't re-record anything — it reads the exact samples inside your selection and writes them straight into a WAV file, which is why the export is instant and lossless within that range. There's also a one-click Quick trim that scans your recording for the loudest stretch and skips the quiet padding at the start and end automatically — useful for cutting dead air without doing it by hand. If a take came out too quiet, the Normalize option boosts it back up to a safe, un-clipped volume on export, and it's smart enough to skip normalizing a genuinely silent selection instead of amplifying pure noise.
How to use it
- Click the red record button and allow microphone access.
- Watch the level meter to confirm you're being picked up; pause and resume anytime.
- Click stop — your waveform appears automatically once the recording finishes decoding.
- Drag the two handles on the waveform to select the part you want, or click Quick trim to auto-detect the spoken section.
- Turn on Normalize if the recording sounds quiet.
- Click Export selection as WAV, or Download original to keep the full, untrimmed take.
- Record as many takes as you like — each is listed separately and saved automatically so a refresh won't lose them.
FAQ
What format does it record in, and can I choose? It automatically picks the best format your browser supports for recording (commonly WebM/Opus). You don't need to choose — but every export as WAV is a universal, uncompressed format that opens anywhere.
Will trimming damage the audio quality? No. The trimmed WAV export is built directly from the decoded audio samples in your selected range, not re-recorded or re-compressed, so quality within the selection is preserved exactly.
What does Quick trim actually detect? It measures loudness across short windows of your recording and finds where speech or sound genuinely starts and ends, trimming the near-silent padding before and after. If your whole clip is silent, it tells you rather than trimming randomly.
I recorded something too quiet — can this fix it? Turn on Normalize before exporting. It boosts the selected audio up toward a safe maximum volume without clipping. If the selection is completely silent, it skips normalizing rather than amplifying background noise into something worse.
Are my recordings uploaded anywhere? No — recording, decoding, trimming, and exporting all happen locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
Will I lose my recordings if I close the tab or refresh? No, each finished take is saved to your browser automatically as soon as it's recorded. Use "Clear all recordings" whenever you want to remove them for good. If you're combining several takes into one file afterward, the audio merger can stitch them together.
Privacy
Your microphone audio is processed entirely on your device — nothing is streamed or uploaded during recording, decoding, or export. Finished takes are kept in your browser's local storage so they survive a page refresh, and you can clear them permanently at any time.
This tool deals with sensitive personal data (your own voice). If you're recording anything private, remember that "saved in your browser" means saved on this device — clear your recordings before using a shared or public computer.
